Participant Testimonials

As well as organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities for the young people of Tulse Hill and Brixton, The St. Matthew’s Project is committed to supporting and developing our young people beyond simply participating in our activities.

Our coaches are recruited from within the local community, the majority of whom have come through the scheme themselves (including ex-gang members), who can then act as inspiring and positive role models to the participants. The opportunity to volunteer within the Project also allows them to become qualified coaches themselves.

Since joining in July 2022, I’ve loved every part of being involved in the project. I started out by just coming along on Saturdays, which I quickly picked up loads of friends and connections. This then grew into playing league games and playing at the London youth games where I was able to thrive and push myself further. That journey has now led me into coaching, and I really enjoy stepping into this role—especially the chance to connect with the younger kids and pass on what I’ve learned. Becoming a coach has helped me grow in confidence and develop new skills, and I’m excited to keep building on this experience in the future, wherever it takes me.

Becoming a football coach has taught me not only responsibility but how to inspire and communicate with young people. These are great skills I can take into the corporate workforce and eventually as a parent.

I have been at SMP since I was 10 years old and come up through the teams all the way up to under 16s. Through out this I have always been given help when needed whether that be by Dwight himself for the other coaches and they have always given there players a platform to speak to them and I am so grateful for the SMP team for giving me the opportunity to now give these things back to the community and help the young players the way I was helped when I was there age and I cant wait to support younger footballers to become the best that they can be.

The transition from being a player to now coaching has not only equipped me with communication and leadership skills but it also taught me that great things are made when a community is involved which I think St Matthew’s project displays perfectly.

Over the last 6 years, as a player and now a coach, I have understood the valuable skills and knowledge that are needed to help me grow and mature as a person, and develop a better understanding of young people. These are great qualities that I am confident will help me in future employment and adult life.

I joined the St Matthew's Project community at age 12, receiving my first introduction into competitive football. At age 16, I transitioned into becoming a volunteer coach, then a qualified coach for both the girls' Ferndale section and Brockwell mixed section. Now, at age 21, I have been appointed to develop the U10S boys team. My journey with SMP can be defined by the opportunities it has given me—not only in football but also in my career. SMP has given me fundamental experiences (confidence, leadership, and communication skills) needed to thrive in any setting, especially during my formative years. SMP's ethos—shaping the futures of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds—has influenced me to pursue a career in education and community development. I am immensely grateful for what SMP has done for me.
